Extra info for Bahrain (World Bibliographical Series)
There are surprisingly few books or articles written exclusively on Bahrain, although the country is mentioned in many general texts on oil and the British involvement in the Gulf. The large number of publications in these fields necessitates a degree of subjectivity in the choice of those to include in this bibliography. Consequently only publications that provide important background material or more than a passing reference to Bahrain have normally been included. Certain sections, such as those on languages, education, sports and recreation, and the arts, nevertheless remain poorly represented.
The third recent example of the investment of Gulf capital in new heavy industry in Bahrain is the iron pelletization plant. This was also started in 1981 and it is being built for the Arab Iron and Steel Company. Finally, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia founded the Heavy Oil Conversion Page xxvii Company in 1981 to construct a fuel oil cracker in Bahrain with a proposed capacity of 80,000 b/d. In association with these major projects other smaller industries have also been developed in recent years so that Bahrain now boasts a number of medium-sized companies involved in the production of supplementary gas, asphalt, prefabricated housing, plastics, soft drinks, air conditioning equipment, paper products, and ship servicing and repairs.
The increases in oil output until the 1970s and the changes in the participation agreements meant that the state revenue from oil production has increased dramatically. In 1952 an agreement between Shaikh Sulman and BAPCO provided for a half-and-half profit sharing arrangement, greatly increasing government revenue, but unlike other Gulf states Bahrain was relatively slow to take its hydrocarbon industry fully into its own hands. In November 1974 the government signed an agreement to acquire a 60 per cent share in BAPCO's oil and gas exploration and production activities, excluding the refinery, and this became effective in July 1975.
