The good folks over at Playstation sent out an email to everyone that’s subscribed to them last year (October 15, 2020) which had some very important details pertaining to their online store for the PS3, PSP, and PS VITA stores. In the email it said you won’t be able to buy games on said consoles via a desktop or mobile device – which would go into effect from the 21st – 26th. See the screenshot below:
Then much later on in a blog post Sony announced they would be shutting down the digital stores for those consoles on July 2, 2021 (PS3 & PSP), and August 27, 2021 (PS VITA). Of course, fans were highly vocal about them shutting down the stores and no longer being able to buy content on those platforms. It was literally Doomsday for us, and we all know time flies. Having this announced in March only led to gamers (myself included) to rushing out to buy the games we wanted the most either digitally or physically before the inevitable.
**PSP didn’t make the cut and original plans to shut down will continue**
“Upon further reflection, however, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I’m happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021 as planned.“
Just announced today – Playstation has announced in another blog post that they’ve heard the community and decided against their inital decision. This is great news to fans because this means that a lot of video games that haven’t been made into a physical version will still be preserved via their digital stores. Moral of the story is this: these companies are listening to their communities, so be vocal (and respectful) and let your voice be heard!
