Sony’s State of Plays have been very hit or miss a lot of the time. Sometimes they have really good shows, including their first party showcases, but then other times they have incredibly weak and pointless shows (at least for me). Today’s showcase was one of the first big shows for the wonderful Summer Games Fest (no longer E3, but feels like E3 with all the showcases). So, was this show a lackluster State of Play, or was this one of the best ones they’ve ever done?
Bandai Namco really showed up today with multiple reveals. Everybody’s Golf Hot Shots from Bandai Namco is coming to PS5, Nintendo Switch (we knew about this from the Nintendo Direct earlier this year), and PC on September 5, 2025. You will get a Pac-Man character if you pre-order the game before launch, which is a cool addition. The next Digimon game, Digimon Story: Time Stranger, got its release date for October 3rd, 2025, and while I am seriously looking forward to the game, launching one day after Ghost of Yotei is a bit of a risk in my book. A third Bandai Namco game, Hirogami, is being developed by Bandai Singapore and published by Kakehashi Games, which releases on September 3rd, 2025 for PS5 and PC, and it looks great. You play as a hero capable of folding yourself in origami forms, and it looks like a blast to play!

Indie titles were definitely not excluded from the show in any way. We also got a new look at the silly and cool walking physics-based game Baby Steps from Devolver Digital, releasing on September 9 for PC and PS5. I am actually excited for this game and I hope I will be able to keep my feet forward and play it. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, which was revealed in the past, came around and we got a new release date plus an exciting new trailer. Despite this game looking really fun, it will also have the challenge that the IP is known to have. It launches July 31st for PS4/5, PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Cairn has been shown many times before, and I’m looking forward to its launch on November 5th, 2025.

There were also a bunch of surprises today including a brand new trailer for Pragmata, releasing next year. Yes, it is indeed a real game and it is looking great from the new trailer Capcom released. An action adventure game in space that incorporates science fiction with stunning graphics in this brand new single player title. It will be released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series sometime in 2026 (let’s hope for real this time)! On top of this, a familiar title that has been dormant for a while got some new life… but on VR. Thief VR will launch later on this year, and while I don’t really use VR personally, I think it’s cool that the IP has been given another chance. Lumines Arise was also revealed and is coming during Fall 2025 for PS5, PSVR2, and PC. It looks like a fun time, and if you have played Lumines or Tetris Effect Connected, this game is from that studio and it looks good.

There were some games I am personally not interested in. Silent Hill: f from Konami, which is releasing September 25th on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. It’s cool for horror fans and those who like the Silent Hill franchise, but I am personally not one of those people. A second game that I personally am not as excited for is Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement, a new game in the Bloodstained IP coming out next year on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series. A third game I personally didn’t care about was Tides of Tomorrow launching on Feb 24th, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. Nioh fans, your time has come again. Koei Tecmo has revealed that the franchise will continue in 2026 with Nioh 3 on PC and PS5. I am not a souls or souls-like player, but I am glad that those of you who like them will get to play this title soon. Sea of Remnants is a free-to-play RPG revealed today, and while it looks like it has a great art style and cool mechanics, I don’t like the concept of it being a F2P title. It launches in 2026 on PS5, PC, iOS, and Android.

Besides updates to already announced titles, loads of brand new games were revealed during this show that I enjoyed. Romeo is A Dead Man is a brand new game from Suda51 and Grasshopper Manufacture, and it definitely has vibes of No More Heroes and also a bit of Dead Rising. I am super excited to see more of this one in the future, and it is coming in 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. We knew a 007 game was in the works, and we got a trailer for 007 First Light at the showcase and it looked great. It features a younger James Bond and reminded me of the Uncharted game style a bit, and I am actually excited for this title since it appears to be a third-person action game. It launches next year on Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series, and PC and I cannot wait to play it!

Remasters, Remakes, and retro collections obviously are a big thing in the gaming space and Sony did have a few of these kinds of games too! Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is coming out on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 1 & 2, and PC. This game launches on September 30th, 2025 and it includes the remastered version with better visuals and quality of life improvements, along with the original version as well. I think that is cool that they did that to add value for the players and fans of this game! Retro fans have a brand new Kollection from Digital Eclipse, and yeah, it is Mortal Kombat! Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection is a bunch of the older games in one massive package, and it looks like a lot of fun and I am excited to play it in 2025. It is also a multiplatform release coming to Nintendo Switch 1/2, PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater got a new trailer for its release coming on August 28th, 2025… and this trailer showcased a few different things, including a look at the Ape Escape crossover that was announced previously.

The PlayStation Plus Catalog got some big updates and reveals today, which was a nice thing to see in the Sony State of Play. Coming on June 17th is FBC Firebreak and that is a Day 1 release for the extra tier. It is a multiplayer first-person shooter from Remedy, so I personally am not interested in the game, but I think some might like this title. On top of this, for the extra tier and above, the other game that was revealed was Sword of the Sea from developer Giant Squid. Now this title has been a game that I have been wanting more information on since ever playing Abzu and The Pathless, and we finally got it. I am looking forward to playing on August 19th, 2025. Regarding the classics selection, the original Deus Ex is coming on June 17th, Twisted Metal 3 and Twisted Metal 4 are coming on July 15th, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 Nemesis are coming sometime this summer, and lastly we have Myst and Riven which were already announced before and coming later this month as part of the days of play promotion. I personally have PlayStation Plus Premium, and I honestly am happy with the many games that we keep getting for a rotating library, along with the monthly free games.

Honestly, they had a lot of games that were shown here from the third-party teams; however, they did have a few games from the first-party side that I didn’t expect to see. Firstly, we saw a tiny little teaser for Ghost of Yotei with a State of Play coming in July focused on gameplay, and I am super excited to see this next month as it is one of my most anticipated games for the rest of the year. Besides this, they also announced that more missions and levels are coming for the wonderful GOTY of 2024, Astro Bot! I am hopeful that Sony sees this success and allows more for the franchise in the future. Sony also announced the creation of the PlayStation fighting stick, which I didn’t care much about but I did find cool for the fighting game community. Then, they finished the showcase with the biggest reveal of them all, at least in my book! The show ended with a brand new PlayStation Studios project that I never would have seen coming! PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works, and MARVEL GAMES have teamed up on a brand new 4v4 fighting game. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is coming to PS5 and PC in 2026, and I am absolutely here for it and ready to play it, even if I am not a massive fighting game player.

Honestly, it was definitely one of the best shows out there from Sony and the PlayStation team. Putting this out there today was smart since tomorrow, the Nintendo Switch 2 launches, and Sony needed to remind people why they should get a PlayStation console with exclusives and third-party support that will appeal to a large variety of players. No game show is perfect, but I don’t remember a show as powerful as this for me personally. Honestly, I would easily give this showcase a solid 9/10. If you want to see the trailers or the showcase as a whole, check it out below!
