If you haven’t been aware of what’s been going on in the gaming world, we’re currently experiencing one of the best seasons of gaming—Geoff Keighley’s very own E3 killer: Summer Game Fest. I’ve never been to E3 (RIP to a real one), but I can only imagine how hype it must’ve been to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow gamers, surrounded by giant posters of unreleased games and that faint scent of Mountain Dew in the air.
Sunday’s Xbox Showcase came out swinging like it was trying to win back the console war by sheer force of Game Pass additions. And honestly? They might be onto something. From a brand-new handheld device to some massive AAA reveals and indie darlings, Xbox crammed this show tighter than a launch-day console into a scalper’s shopping cart. So let’s break down the biggest announcements and why you should be paying attention.
Plot twist no one saw coming: Xbox is going portable. Enter the ROG Xbox Ally, a sleek, Windows 11-powered handheld made in collaboration with Asus. It’s got full Xbox Game Pass integration, meaning you can now rage-quit Elden Ring from anywhere in your house—bathroom included. Scheduled for holiday 2025, this device feels like Xbox’s answer to the Steam Deck and Switch, and it might just make handheld gaming cool again.

The showcase also dropped some heat in the remake and indie departments. Persona 4 Revival is officially happening—cue the emotional jazz beats and existential dread. It’s getting the full remake treatment, and fans (myself included) are not okay in the best way. Hollow Knight: Silksong crawled out of its hole with some good news, launching with the Xbox Ally and also in Game Pass this holiday season. No specific release date yet, but hey, crumbs are still calories so I’ll take it. And then there’s Super Meat Boy 3D, which is exactly what it sounds like—a new 3D take on the cult classic platformer that’s ready to break your spirit in three dimensions. Bonus: it’s launching day one on Game Pass.
On the blockbuster front, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is set some time during the future (again…) and brings back the beloved Zombies mode. But as high-tech and cool as it looks, It feels like more of the same Call of Duty that we know. Meanwhile, High on Life 2, the sequel to the loudmouth and raunchy shooter from Squanch Games, is landing this winter and looks like it’s doubling down on its absurdity.
Ninja Gaiden 4 wasn’t shy about sneaking in and almost stealing the show either. Team Ninja clearly knows how to make an entrance—and a few decapitations while they’re at it. The visuals look downright fantastic, with sleek, modernized environments and fast-paced action that screams classic Ninja Gaiden. It’s stylish, it’s brutal, and it looks like it’s sticking to the series’ roots with high-speed, painstaking combat and unforgiving difficulty. If you’ve been craving the kind of gameplay that punishes your mistakes and rewards perfect execution, this one’s shaping up to be a glorious return to form.

For the RPG heads, Xbox had plenty to love. The Outer Worlds 2 got its own post-show Direct and locked in an October 29 release date. It promises all the snark and narrative chaos you loved from the first game, now with more polish and choice-driven consequences…and perks? What was particularly hilarious to me was the Bad Knees perk, which is something that triggers when you’re being stealthy and crouch for too long, and when you stand up, you and your enemies both will hear your knees snap, crackle, and pop. This piqued my interest because, you know…representation. And it seems like Obsidian raised the bar on the comedy with this one.
Beast of Reincarnation is a new action-RPG from none other than Game Freak, set in a post-apocalyptic world that leans harder into dark themes than their usual fare–and no one saw this coming from Game Freak, I still can’t believe it myself. Double Fine also showed off Keeper, and Thunder Lotus introduced At Fate’s End—both dripping with style, charm, and likely a few emotional gut punches.

Nostalgia hit hard with returning fan-favorites and revamped classics. Grounded 2 is bringing more bug-sized chaos in the backyard, launching into early access on July 29. Gears of War: Reloaded—a full remaster and complete version (if you have the ultimate edition, then this is a free upgrade) of the original game- was the mic-drop moment. Oh, and in case that wasn’t enough, —is coming August 26, complete with cross-play, cross-progression, 4K HDR, 60FPS campaign, 120 FPS multi-player, Dolby vision, and for the first time ever, PS5 support.
On the expansion side of things, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is dropping new content on September 4. A Plague Tale: Resonance is officially teased, and both Fallout 76 and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3+4 are receiving new updates. Yes, we’re getting more ollies and more mutants.
Phil Spencer ended the show with a tease-filled closer. A new Fable trailer might be on the horizon, the next Forza is revving its engines, and Halo fans might finally get that long-rumored remaster. Oh, and in case you were wondering where Square Enix stands—Final Fantasy 7 Intergrade and Final Fantasy 16 are both heading to Xbox. In fact, you can buy Final Fantasy 16 right now. This should have been the closer for the show and not Call of Duty, simply because Xbox fans have been asking for Final Fantasy 7 to show up for years now, and they finally got it. To the Xbox community: don’t complain about not getting any JRPG support, because now it’s here and you need to show up!

This showcase felt like Xbox flexing every muscle it has—hardware innovation, Game Pass dominance, and a serious push into cross-platform relevance. Whether you’re a diehard fan or just Game Pass-curious, the 2025–2026 lineup is stacked. As a gaming fan, I was very happy with this presentation and what Xbox has lined up for us. I could’ve gone without some of the smaller titles being shown but honestly, every game has an audience that was looking forward to seeing more, so I’m cool with it. After rounding out the weekend with some cool footage and announcements, I’d score this showcase a solid 8/10. Great job Xbox, I’m looking forward to spending even more time on my Series X now!
