Newly leaked image on Sony’s Polish website leads to speculation

Earlier today a newly leaked image suggests Sony may be bringing movies and/or video content to their PS Plus subscription service, titled Playstation Plus Video Pass. The image was leaked on their Polish website and on their homepage, which was captured by VGC and has since been taken down. This seems to be a move on Sony’s part to be more appealing to both long-time customers and new ones alike. It is unclear whether this is their response to Microsoft’s Xbox GamePass but they have made moves before in the past as a result of it. Vanessa Lee, Head of Video Business, SIE has stated via the Playstation blog they will no longer sell or rent movies and other video content as of August 31, 2021.

At SIE, we strive to provide the best entertainment experience for PlayStation fans, and that means evolving our offerings as customer needs change. We’ve seen tremendous growth from PlayStation fans using subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services on our consoles. With this shift in customer behavior, we have decided to no longer offer movie and TV purchases and rentals through PlayStation Store as of August 31, 2021.

When this change takes effect, users can still access movie and TV content they have purchased through PlayStation Store for on-demand playback on their PS4, PS5 and mobile devices. We thank our fans for their continued support, and we look forward to further enhancing the entertainment experience on PlayStation.

The image above, that have since been taken down show a few movies that were made by Sony. As of right now if you check out their current movies section you’ll see some other blockbusters such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, Bloodshot, and Jumanji. Since these images have been taken down, one can speculate this new service is something that’ll be incorporated into existing PS PLUS memberships – which honestly does bring more value. This lines up with the recent changing of their name to Playstation Studios and have announced movie and TV adaptations of some of their most popular games (Uncharted, The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima). It would make sense for Sony to get into the streaming business since a large portion of their IPs are on other platforms – this could mean more money in their pockets to fund bigger and better projects. If this is something that goes into affect for current PS Plus owners, I may never leave my man-cave. More on this as the story develops!
