Warner Brothers have been on a, at least in my opinion, decline ever since they were merged with Discovery. Whether that be in their television, movies, multi-media projects, and yes in their games as well. People still like WB Games, and I still play titles from them, but I definitely have seen more problems in their releases than I use to. Unfortunately, their animation IPs have been either left to the dust, removed or canceled for tax reasons, or a way to entice people into buying their Max service. There hasn’t been a new Looney Tunes game that for a long time, but the drought has ended with the release of Wacky World of Sports. This game has been licensed to Gamemill Entertainment and Bamtang Games, who have done many licensed games based on popular IPs, with varying degrees of quality. Is Wacky World of Sports a cheap cash grab for fans of the Looney Tunes IP or did they actually make a good game?

This game is one that consists of four different sports games with each having a varied degree of fun. The sports games included in this title are Basketball, Soccer, Tennis, and Golf. Each of these sports have a total of three (3) stages, with golf having 9 holes available per stage. There are 9 playable characters that you can play in the game from the Looney universe, which is a decent number I think. Unfortunately in the game, there is no story mode involving these characters. I found it being a baffling choice that it doesn’t have one, especially how the IP has some crazy moments. I wish it had one as the modes that are on offer kind of leave a bit to be desired after playing it for 13.5 hours. One of the modes on offer is Challenges which has a total of 80 activities, 20 per sport, that are available. There is also the Ultimate Cup which is where you play a mixture of all the sports in a randomized order with randomized elements like teams and stages. Lastly on offer is Sports Mode where you can play regular matches that can be customized to your liking. Unfortunately, not all sports are the same in terms of quality or polish.

Playing basketball isn’t great in many ways, but I wouldn’t actually call it down right terrible. As a collective, and judging it against the others, it is definitely the worst of the bunch though. In terms of moves you have a normal pass, shove, high pass, jump, dunk, and an alley-oop. On top of this, items will appear around the court for you to use such as an anvil to stun other opponents, pies to throw in faces, running shoes to speed up, and more. There is a special meter as well to perform your special dunk shot if you choose to do it. If you just shoot the ball and not dunk it, the animation of the character is the exact same which is a bit weird to be honest.

One of the reasons it is the worst of the four is that no matter what difficulty you play on, the AI bots are so aggressive its just somewhat infuriating. You are just about to shoot, and the ball is about to leave your hand… it is snatched. This sometimes even happens when it already left your hand then the ball is randomly snatched, basically like a delayed reaction happened. Another reason is because of the way in which these challenges are done. None of the challenges in the entire game are all that great to be honest, but I had the most trouble and annoyances in basketball. These range from things like winning the game with certain special shots, shoot baskets from specific marked spots on the court, hit enemies with objects, and more. Again, I wouldn’t call it terrible, but I wouldn’t say its great either.

In terms of the gameplay of soccer you have your standard pass, a high pass, a kick, steal, shove, and more. You also have a special shot that will charge up over time when scoring goals, stealing the ball, and more. Just like in basketball, you also have items that can be used to help you or hurt opponents. These special shots are different for every character, which I think is cool to see. Roadrunner speeds up and flings the ball towards the goal, while someone like Wile E. Coyote has a rocket that blows up on him and makes the ball go flying at the goal. Using the special shot, you have a three button QTE that appears. If you get all three, its a guaranteed goal, but if you miss one or two, it is lucky if the ball goes in. The opponents can break you out of it, so just be prepared for a bit of anger on that regard.

At first, I seriously didn’t like the soccer experience in the game. Once I really played a few games and understood more of the controllers, it isn’t actually as bad as I originally thought it was. There are problems with it, don’t get me wrong. The goalies in the game are a tad annoying and very aggressive in blocking the shots. You have to angle the shots and power in just the right ways in order for the ball to go in the goal. The opponents are pretty aggressive (not as bad as basketball for the most part thankfully), so lining up your shot isn’t always the easiest thing to do either. The challenges for soccer range from things like winning a game without using specific abilities, score a certain number of goals with environmental hazards within a small amount of time, and more. Again, I wouldn’t call the challenges “fun” but they were decent enough to sit and complete them.

This one is actually harder for me since I both loved and hate what they did in the tennis aspect. You have a standard flat shot, a topspin, a slice, a lob, and your special meter. The difference with this special meter there are actually two things that you can use it for. One of these is to slowly drain your meter in order to slow down time in order to get to the ball. You have to have half a meter to activate this power, but it definitely was cool to see this being here. The other one is when you have a full meter, you can activate your special shot that is a super powerful hit.

The big problem I have here, is it doesn’t completely drain your meter so if you are quick enough, you basically can fire off multiple special shots without much of a gap in-between each. This definitely would be problematic in a multiplayer aspect, but there is no online multiplayer for this game. Honestly, tennis is a very solid experience here for the most part, and I really liked these challenges the most. The challenges ranged between volleying with opponents, not missing a ball for a certain amount of time, win a game with only specific types of shots, and more. All of which was pretty easy to do. I did have some issues with tennis, but more of that later…

My absolute favorite sport in this game, without a doubt has to be golf. The controls are pretty intuitive from your power meter for your swing, items on the field, aerial view to see more of the field, and also the shot camera to show the shot trajectory. There is also a special ability shot that changes per character that you are playing as. Basically the power shots are the same exact ones from the other sports, so it is a reused set of assets, but I am not sure that is a deal breaker for me.

In terms of issues, besides the bugs I only seriously had issues when it came to the challenges for golf, and maybe it was just me. There was one challenge that you had to make it in par or under and you had to hit both of the targets that were on the field. It sounds like an easy thing to do, but only after playing that level for about half an hour, did I finally get it, and I actually kind of got lucky in how I finished it. The final challenge for the golf ones was a 9 hole course against a seriously strong AI that if you made a mistake even twice, you basically were out of luck and had to restart. I swear that out of the 13.5 hours I put in the game, those two challenges easily took about 2 of those… Other than that, some challenges included getting par or below with strong winds, par or below with hazards, hitting targets, and more. This was definitely the most polished of the sports in this package.

There is a training mode for each of the games with both basic and advanced things to complete. I only did the tennis one… I wish I skipped it as it was just tedious and boring to be honest. You can skip them as the controls are intuitive and easy to grasp when you first get in the game. I completed all of the challenges and after I finished them all I was not really sure what else there is for me in the game. The Ultimate Cup mode was fun for a couple of times, but honestly it is just more of the same. In both Challenges and Ultimate Cup, you can unlock some of the stadiums, colors, or designs for the games you can customize in sports mode. If the game had online multiplayer then maybe it would be more enjoyable. It has couch co-op but no online and that is seriously a big let down in 2024 when it comes to sports and multiplayer focused games.

I unfortunately encountered a bunch of bugs and problems regarding the gameplay. Unfortunately based on my experience with other Gamemill titles in the past, I actually expected a few issues here and there with Looney Tunes. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 1 and 2, Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3, and others I played from them all had issues, so I knew I should expect it here as well! There was definitely less of a polish than I would have hoped, especially considering this is a $50 title in 2024. During a very competitive time of year with the number of games releasing, it doesn’t look so good when there are massive issues that are somewhat hard to overlook.

One of the big bugs came in while I was playing golf. I kept falling through the map during some golf games. This was the case for all of the maps, not just one of them. It resulted me in loosing the challenge or having to restart the match. Another bug that I encountered throughout every single sport was button input registering incorrectly or not at all. I pressed a button and either it didn’t do anything or it did something I didn’t tell it to do. For example, in Basketball I pressed the button to pass the ball, and it used one of my power-ups instead. A third bug was in tennis, sometimes my teammate bot and the opposing team bots would just stand still and not move whatsoever. It happened constantly and it made the games easy at least, but it just is a big issue that I hope is fixed. At least there were no crashes in the game, so I will give them that as a positive!

On top of the bugs I encountered in the game in regards to the gameplay, I had different issues when it came to the animation of the characters. Sometimes the characters acted like they were well developed and well animated in the game. This is especially the case for golf and tennis, and for the most part in soccer as well. Other times, they looked like a stiff character model on a movement track. I wish I was kidding when I said that… but just look at the video below for basketball. Your character will stand there stiff and just move backwards on what appears is like an invisible track, every single time! Not sure if that is intentional but it doesn’t look great. It isn’t just your one or two of the characters, rather it is the case for everyone. It kind of felt that basketball was thrown in at the end of development sometimes as there are weird things all around with it. Inconsistency is something that should not be around when it comes to a compilation of titles.

Visually the game doesn’t look horrible as a collective package, but nothing is all that mind blowing. The colors that the game uses are bright, upbeat, and definitely pop out at you. The character models, minus the way they are sometimes move, all look pretty good. The teams seemed like they put in effort to the designs of the characters, so I commend them for doing that. The background characters during stages also look nice, but they just move up and down and it gets a little old pretty quickly. The backgrounds themselves on the other hand definitely aren’t as great when you repeatedly have to look at the same ones over and over again without much variety. The golf courses are a bit different since there are 9 holes per course, so you can get a bit of variety here.

In terms of the performance of the game on my 3050TI laptop, it runs just fine. I normally was hitting a solid 60 frames or just about slightly below or above on occasion. There unfortunately isn’t a huge amount of PC things that can be adjusted. Considering I am primarily a console gamer, I actually do not mind this for the most part. V-Sync is nice to have in all games and the game definitely has 1080p for the visual quality. The graphics quality should absolutely be set to high or ultra settings. I tried looking at both, but honestly I couldn’t see much of one between them. I stuck with high since that was what worked out great from me.

Overall the sound design of the game is sometimes very good and sometimes below average. I am not sure if the voices of the characters were just sounds previously recorded for the show. Did they go out and get the characters for the game because if they did, that is impressive. The voices all sound great, so I definitely give them props here! In terms of the sound design, the items like anvils, boxes, pies, and more sounded like they did in the TV universe. Sometimes the audio in different parts would cut out for brief moments or be delayed for a tad bit of time, which does affect the overall feeling of the game. Looking at the entire package, I would consider it just average at best.

Lack of modes in sports games unfortunately isn’t an uncommon thing. Nintendo puts out a sports game for specific titles such as Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, and Mario Strikers (Soccer). There is the Nintendo level of polish of each but also they focus on one game at a time, rather than multiple at once. These sports games unfortunately aren’t as polished as you would think it should be at $50. The lack of a story mode is not good and the lack of online multiplayer is also a big detriment to the game. Yes we finally got a brand new Looney Tunes game in 2024, but I seriously wish that Gamemill and Bamtang put a bit more effort into trying to create a package that wasn’t this faulty. With how many releases are coming out right now, $50 seems like a lot for this title. If you are looking at the game and want to play tennis or golf the most, you may have some fun for a while if you can get it a decent price (sorry, not $50). If you are looking at it because you want to play soccer or basketball, I would say maybe look elsewhere. If you are a die hard Looney Tunes fan, it might be something to grab for the collection in case it is removed later for tax purposes… No story mode, lack of online play in 2024, and an overall decent to sub-par feeling across the board means I feel like your money will be better elsewhere in this crazy time for game releases.
